Buckwheat

Despite its name, buckwheat (Fagopyrum exulentum) is not a cereal grain but rather a fruit related to rhubarb. It is a broadleaved plant, which is primarily grown commercially in eastern Europe and North America. The dried fruit of the buckwheat is mechanically separated from the hull and marketed as whole buckwheat, cracked (groats), or a ground flour. It is a highly nutritious food.

Buckwheat Hulls

Buckwheat hulls provide a beneficial, breathable garden mulch, but further processing is necessary for "pillow-grade" hulls. After milling, these hulls must be cleaned with air and sifted to remove dust and debris. In this form, buckwheat hulls have been used as pillow fill for The slightly curved shape of the hull segments tend to interlock when used in the thousands as a pillow fill. This property creates a pillow which will retain any shape formed by the hand or head.

Millet Hulls

Millet hulls are separated from the millet grain (Panicum miliceum). Millet is a traditional, staple food in many human cultures, but is easily recognized in North America as bird seed. Millet hulls have been used for hundreds of years in Europe as a natural pillow filling. The tiny spherical millet hulls create a pillow fill which is soft, smooth and quiet. They provide stable support in a firm pillow.

BUCKWHEAT HULL & MILLET HULL PILLOWS

We use clean organic buckwheat hulls

Buckwheat hull and millet hull pillows are recognized as an environmentally friendly and orthopedically healthy sleep support. They are considered hypo-allergenic and will not attract dust mites. They are recommended by chiropractors, massage therapists and physiotherapists to aid in the relief of neck and back pain, headaches, muscle tension and sleeplessness.

Compared to other sleep pillow fills, such as polyfill, foam, or feathers, buckwheat and millet hulls will neither compact nor bounce back. The hulls shift easily and naturally to conform to the contours of the head and neck, providing good support and minimizing stress on the neck and shoulders. Thus, your muscles can be relaxing, rather than working to retain a comfortable supported position.

Buckwheat Hulls vs. Millet Hulls

In comparing the two types of hulls, we have found that millet hulls provide a slightly lighter-weight pillow which is softer and smoother than a buckwheat hull pillow. The millet hulls, however, do not hold their position as well when shaped. Buckwheat hulls give a soft sound when shifting; the millet hulls are quiet. Hulls allow air to move through the pillow, and will keep the head at a comfortable temperature for better sleep; due to their shape, buckwheat hulls provide better airflow. Both types of hulls are durable and long-lasting and have a pleasant natural fragrance.
